The dice, plainly
Every skill check in Portofiro is one of four kinds. A passive check is the line itself: pass it and the skill speaks, fail it and that line never arrives, while the conversation takes the card's failure exit and leaves no gap where the line would have been. White checks are deliberate: you spend the attempt, and failure closes the white check without closing the conversation. Anti-passive checks punish you for having a skill too high when high is exactly wrong. Red checks are the dramatic ones: fail one and the conversation continues through that check's failure exit.
