The handheld build

The engineering write-up for the handheld version, and the rare case where a platform's constraints improved every other platform.

Rendering through Vulkan rather than the compatibility layer's DirectX translation raised the framerate by up to 23 percent. Scenes with heavy visual effects were profiled and optimised, which benefits desktop players too. The target resolution is 800p at 16:10 rather than the more common 16:9, so much of the interface was rebuilt to suit a wider range of screens.

By default the framerate is capped at half the refresh rate to extend battery life, 30 frames on the LCD models and 45 on the OLED, and a setting removes the cap. The studio's engineering lead noted that making the font scalable for a small screen also serves anyone who wants larger text on a desk.
