"Yo, habibti." Goat Eyes flicks his cigarette.

I am a man of many endeavours." He taps his chest twice with his index finger.
"Your name is... Goat Eyes?"
"The one and only."
Branch
"Is your name because of... you know."
"The eyes? Sure. You ever seen a goat? Their eyes are all bugged out, but you know they have that savagery inside them."
"I respect the goats. That's why I picked the name myself."
"I envy their life. Far less sorrow, more grazing."
"Good jumpers too. Versatile skillset."
The ruler of a future kingdom, his throne already concrete in his mind.
Branch
"Goats can't be trusted until we fully assess their jump physics."
"Tell you what, you come up with some theories, I'll sell the t-shirts."
"Pasture-tier cryptonym. You need a rebrand... something that hunts."
"I'm good. Predators show up and break themselves on me. No claws, no stealth -- just full-frontal violence."
"Aspirational creatures. The perfect example of persistence without grace."
"They got those little beards. That's graceful."
Stare into his goaty eyes.
He stares right back, blinking slowly.
A practiced calm. He knows how he looks and dares you to question the asymmetry.
He's reading you in return. A man trained by an informal school.
Branch
"Are you from around here?"
"Nah, I'm no Quisach boy." His eyes crinkle in amusement. "I come here to work, and then I go home. That's about it."
"Why? You don't like the neighbourhood?"
"It's not meant for me, is it?" His eyes flicker, like sparks on metal. "Not these days. I remember being twelve, me and my friends coming here just to watch the pelota fights. Drunk fans going at each other with screwdrivers. There were bets and shit."
"But hey, I like tourists with money." He smiles, revealing a gap tooth. "And tourists love Quisach. It's got colours, it's got music. No better place to pass through before heading home."
Branch
"Good for business, I take it."
"And getting better by the day." His eyes flicker, like sparks on metal. "It's not what it was even ten years ago. Cleaner, you know? You won't see a Recreación fan catching a screwdriver to the stomach."
"Where's 'home', then?"
"Born and raised in Lower Viudas." He taps his chest with his left hand. "An hour away by tram, if the lines hold."
Branch
"And I'm Rustamian, like your tall friend." He smiles. "My mother came to Portofiro when she was little. Raised me on hibiscus tea and stories about the commune."
Branch
Branch
The Dream of Rustam. For eighty years, there were no kings or bosses -- only open councils, grain cooperatives, and radio poets. As the Developed World spread, the Dream cracked.
"My mother's a Rustam woman, inland blood. Came to Portofiro with her parents when she was eleven." He smiles. "She raised me on hibiscus tea and stories about the commune."
"Never been to Lower Viudas. What's it like?"
"It's quiet, if you're used to shouting. Neighbourhood's made up of fourteen towers. Nestor had it built in the 50s. For immigrants, mostly."
"We got a barber, Timo, who does solid tattoos. Old khalti selling candles out the windows. Best bakeries in town." He nods. "You should visit. Bring your friends."
A place where you grow up with the same people, watch their faces change, their dogs die. It's home.
Branch
"It does sound nice."
"And you'd never know it according to those travel pamphlets they hand out. They got all of Viudas coloured orange in there. Like it's dangerous."
Branch
"And you'd never know it according to those travel pamphlets they hand out. They got all of Viudas coloured…"Who else is gonna do it? You know how tourist pamphlets have coloured maps? Lower Viudas is orange. You…"I'll be your friend. I'll be anything you want me to be." He smiles. "I only mention it because travel…
"Is it not?"
"Nah." He shuffles on his feet. "Sure, you got kids with glassy eyes, some break-ins. But we're civilised, yeah?"
"Old people, they think Lower Viudas should clean up. Look decent." He shrugs. "We're not the ones scared of poverty."
"Nah." He shuffles on his feet. "Sure, you got kids with glassy eyes, some break-ins. But we're civilised,…"See? This is why you're my girl. Knows all the language, would fit right in." He shuffles on his feet. "But,…"Sure, but you won't find any of that unless you're looking for it. Neighbourhood business is neighbourhood…
Branch
"This is what happens when people are separated from each other -- not like in the commune."
"See? This is why you're my girl. Knows all the language, would fit right in." He shuffles on his feet. "But, hear me, not everyone gets it, yeah?"
"Dangerous can be fun."
"Sure, but you won't find any of that unless you're looking for it. Neighbourhood business is neighbourhood business."
"Travel guide's one of your side-hustles, too?"
"Who else is gonna do it? You know how tourist pamphlets have coloured maps? Lower Viudas is orange. You know, for dangerous."
"The 'friends' part may be a problem."
"I'll be your friend. I'll be anything you want me to be." He smiles. "I only mention it because travel pamphlets have people thinking Viudas is dangerous."
"Are you affiliated with anyone?"
"I'm affiliated with myself, primarily. Why do you ask?"
"I'm asking if you're with the Azzurri mob."
"Oh. Yeah, we're tight."
Does this man have any regard for operational opacity?
"I'm not a direct member. That's for Azzurri folks only. But sometimes, they need things done, and sometimes, I help out."
"And you don't mind telling me that, a stranger?"
"You asked."
He's perfectly aware you're not from around here, much less a cop.
Branch
"Okay." (Move on.)
"Keep talking at me. I'm enjoying it."
"Just wondering if someone in your line of business has to be mindful of 'turfs' and 'allegiances' and such."
"Do you always talk like that? I mean, it's cute, but..." He shrugs. "No, there's only one big player, far as 'turfs' go. That'd be the Azzurris."
"Anyone ever bother you here? Say, the Guardia Municipal?"
"The GMs? Half of them owe me money. Some grew up in Viudas -- we fried plantains on the same radiators. Little Maurito still working the bazaar?"
"No idea."
"He's a decent guy. Don't let the uniform scare you away."
"If I were to stay away from anyone, it'd be the carabineros. These fuckers don't fix problems. They pull 'em out like teeth."
Branch
Branch
"And yet I hear that you hang out with one."
"Someone's been telling you little lies. Don't let them talk poison through you -- that's a dark road."
Bravado. Nothing else.
Branch
Bravado. Nothing else. They had the rare kind of bond that cannot be described. The outlandish jacket, the promises, the smooth flirtations -- all performance. But whatever he's feeling…A warning. "And yet you hung out with Vespar?"
"He was different. Can't explain how. Rest of them are animals."
They had the rare kind of bond that cannot be described.
"Sounds like they've done something to you? Or someone you know?"
"A suspicion, that's all." He looks toward the horizon. "No good talking about it, won't change anything. You just be careful around them."
The outlandish jacket, the promises, the smooth flirtations -- all performance. But whatever he's feeling about this certainly isn't.
"Better stay out of trouble, then."
"You know how it is. You're in on this game, you better know how to play it, otherwise the consequences get nasty."
A warning. From the heart.
For you, as much as it is for him. Has to keep himself sharp, or that'll be the day he loses.
Carabineros: Portofiro's sanctioned police investigators. They report directly to the Prefectura and deal in actual crime -- murder, grand larceny, rape.
"Wouldn't know. I don't talk to law enforcement."
"Yeah, you're not from here. Look, don't worry too much about the GMs.
"Wouldn't know. I don't talk to law enforcement." (Lie.)
"He is. Protecting the peace and all."
"Yeah? That's good, it being boar season and all."
"Let's cool it on you." (Change topic.)
"Take a break. I have a lot to offer."
Branch
"Let's talk about you again, Goat Eyes."
"Love to." He grins.
"Spoke to your boss over the phone."
"I don't have a boss. It's all me." A nod, accompanied by a two-finger salute.
Branch
"You don't have to pretend. I know you're bottom-rung."
"Wow. Girl wants to savage me," he says to an imaginary audience. "What did I do? What made you so angry?"
Branch
"He said you were a good driver."
"Don't know who this person is, but if they're sweet on me like that, then I don't mind if they sing about me from the top of the hills."
"How can I make an order with him?"
"I really can't help you with this, baby-girl. But whatever you do, make sure you don't put yourself in danger. There are dark forces out there."
Unshakeable. He will never budge on this.
A respectable show of how to maintain one's cover.
Branch
"I'm going to make an order with him."
"You do what you must. But make sure you don't put yourself in danger. There are dark forces out there."
"Another thing about Vespar."
"Yeah?"
Branch
Branch
"How did you two meet?"
"We used to talk. You know, as professional men."
"You were his informant."
"Within reason." His gaze softens.
"He got me good. I was selling questionable hashish down in Party Alley at the time. I didn't see him get close. He taps me on the shoulder, I turn around, and there's the asshole, standing in his little GM outfit."
You recall Vespar speaking of his time in the Guardia Municipal. A decade of low-stake days.
"Wait. When was this?"
"88. I was a kid."
"How'd he get you on board?"
"Vespar made it clear he wouldn't leave me alone. I could either talk to him once in a while -- or get long, daily visits wherever I deal."
Making Goat Eyes look like a snitch, with none of the perks.
Party Alley offers options in bulk, if one is looking for ground-level sources. Why him?
"And after that?"
"It was as he said. We'd chat. Within a couple years, he became a carabinero. I was moving up, too. The talks became less regular -- better that way."
Branch
It wouldn't do for an Azzurri associate to be too close to a carabinero, and vice-versa.
Branch
"Made you his snitch, didn't he?"
"Ugly word, that." His gaze softens, right eye slipping farther astray.
"You don't mind telling people you were an informant?"
"I was young, Vespar offered protection." He scratches the side of his nose. "It's Portofiro, you know? GMs and people like me, they work two sides of the same street."
Branch
"Did you like him*?
"He was alright." He blinks, slowly. "So how'd you two meet, anyway?"
Tritos 91. A highly-inebriated Operant CASCADE (schnapps count: ??) is pulled over for 'reckless tuk-tuk driving'.
Terrible night. I was a mess.
Officer Sondo asks for papers. You have none. The tuk-tuk isn't yours, either -- but you don't panic. You smile.
I saw something in Vespar, didn't I?
Potential -- for your still-fledging Portofiro network. And so, you made a move.
I lit up the fires of Perpetual Revolution in him, recast Portofiro's streets as post-historical frontlines.
Dawn. You and Vespar walk out of the Fogged Mirror, with plans to meet the next day. Vespar's pending cryptonym: VIRTUE.
"Yo. I asked you a question. How'd you meet?"
"By chance."
"And so you found each other." He nods, slowly. "I dig that."
And for a moment, you're aware of a great hollow, shaped exactly like your old asset.
Branch
"It was a work thing."
"It must have been more. The way you looked, just now." He taps his chest with a finger. "There was something in here."
"I think we were meant to meet."
"He made people feel that way, didn't he?"
I pitched the big picture as highly-beneficial self-interest.
I offered him a place in the grand machine of the future.
Nobody respects advanced drifting, that's the problem.
I'd thrown up twice. That's technically sober.
The details are hazy. It was some years ago, you were in the city for work, he pulled you over for something bad you'd done.
"Think he might've arrested me one time."
"He got the best of us. There'll be a lot of criminals walking free with him gone."
Branch
"I don't fully remember, to be honest."
"As long as you don't totally forget him." He taps his chest with a finger. "Keep him in there."
"Do you know how he died?"
"Line of duty." He hooks a thumb into his pocket. "That's what the obituary said. Didn't mention the specifics."
And he just happened to come across it?
Branch
"What did it say, exactly?"
"It's been years, but I'm sure it was the usual shit. 'Mourned by his brothers', 'fell in steadfast service to Portofiro'. You know, all that honour talk."
Words that echo of marble, drums, and banners.
Branch
"How'd you get hold of his obituary?"
"It was on all the front pages." He drags a hand along his moustache. "Carabineros don't die every day. When they do, they get these fancy pieces published."
Rings honest enough, but there's something more.
"But you read that one."
"Guess that's true." His tongue presses against his cheek. "Look, I hadn't heard from the man in a while. So, you know, I kept an eye."
He makes it sound like curiosity, but it's concern.
Branch
Branch
"What do you think happened?" (Proceed.)
"Only two possibilities. His own brothers, for failing the 'brotherhood'. Or the Azzurris." He sniffs. "Figure it was the Azzurris."
Branch
His employer? What's he heard?
"News of a dead carabinero usually comes with jokes and shit-talk. Maybe drinks." He sniffs. "But sure as the caped boys were quiet -- so were the Azzurris."
"Think they had a reason to go after Vespar?"
"He'd been on the shit list for a while, I'm sure. Maybe he pissed off one of the pakhans." He tucks his chin down. "Doesn't matter. The uniform's reason enough."
"And..." He shuffles inside his coat. "Vespar didn't look too good, the last time we met. Like he knew something ugly was coming."
Branch
Portofiro's largest organised crime syndicate. Who he no doubt works for.
"It doesn't bother you, knowing your bosses may have done it?"
The young man stares at you for a long time.
"As much as Vespar's outfit bothered me." His jaw shifts sideways. "You stand by everything your employer does, habibti?"
"No."
"Some people think work is an allegiance. It's not." He scoffs. "They pay me for my time. I keep the rest separate."
Branch
"This is different."
"Nah." His misaligned eye wavers, drifting off-axis. "No way."
"What if you ever find out who exactly went after Vespar?"
"There's this old Rustamian saying my grandmother liked." He tongue pokes the inside of his cheek. "'Some truths arrive already carrying a shovel'."
A man leans over a fluted balustrade, savouring a pre-bed cigarillo. The Noscorrentes sea churns like liquid mercury. At his back, a suite of malachite and glass -- and a figure detaching itself from the wall, gun in hand.
"Tell me about the last time you saw Vespar."
"It was a chance encounter. Saw him in East Quisach. He had this sad box of frozen shrimps in one hand, a bag full of booze under his arm."
"I told him, 'Man, the fuck you doing all the way out here?'. Vespar, he grinned like an asshole. 'Fuckin' supply run.' I followed him back to his place."
"When was this?"
"Late 91. A few weeks before... Yeah."
"We hung out for an hour or so. And then he told me he needed to get back to it. Showed me the door."
"And you just left?"
"Habibti, who do you think I am? I told that fuck to roll with me, that I'd get some solid food in him."
"But he just put that smile on again and said, 'Sure, gimme an address. Maybe I'll find my way there." The man before you deflates.
Not wanting to be seen together. But why?
"And you parted ways after that?" (Proceed.)
"Yeah, but before I left, he had a question." He half-smiles. "It was about the day he first approached me. You know, our 'chats'."
"When you became his informant."
"Yeah."
"The deal, back then, was that I wouldn't talk to him about Lower Viudas. Ever. I was firm, you know. No talking about my people."
"Did you even have a choice?"
"Just my balls -- which, legally, were in his hands. He could've said, 'fuck your pride' and hauled me off to the carabineros. But he didn't."
"Right. So what did Vespar want to know?"
"What I would've done if I'd only had two choices that day: turning on my people, or a gun in my mouth."
You feel it, already: a movement, a choice, and a consequence, looming.
"I put two fingers in my mouth, as a reply. Vespar gave me a hug and just said, 'My man'."
Branch
A strange, terrible clarity blooms:
The Weeping Eye tried to flip him.
But he didn't go for it.
He'd gone to ground. Hiding -- or maybe just counting out the days.
One of us, until the end.
"And then he pushed me out the door." His smile falters. "That was that."
"You miss him?"
"It's still 'fuck carabineros' every day, as far as I'm concerned." He flicks his chin. "But I'm willing to give him a pass."
Branch
"It was enough. Thanks, Goat Eyes."
The young man offers you a sombre nod.
There's something you're missing, a piece that doesn't quite fit.
"What'd he ask?"
"Was he on the clock or something?"
"Seemed to be. Vespar's own clock, maybe."
"He lived in East Quisach?"
"Crashing there, more like. Some dingy little apartment -- not his." He sighs. "Reeked, too. His 'guerrilla office' he called it." Suddenly, his expression darkens.
Holed up for days on end, frying your circadian rhythm for The Work. A mangled part of you craves it, always.
"Enough about Vespar." (Go back.)
"Yeah. Something more cheerful, huh?"
Branch
"I was wondering if you know someone called Vespar."
"Vespar." He straightens his posture and gives the surroundings a glance. "Friend of yours?"
Defences going up -- but curiosity as well.
"He was."
"How can I help?"
"I heard he passed away. Is that true?"
"Yeah. Must've been four, maybe five years ago." A corner smile. "Man, feels weird, hearing his name."
So that's it. He's gone.
Asset VIRTUE: confirmed ZEROED OUT.
"More of a professional acquaintance."
"Alright." He studies you. "What's on your mind?"
"Doesn't matter. Do you know him or not?"
"If it didn't, you wouldn't be asking." He studies you. "What's on your mind?"
"Do you know the way to the Bootleg Bazaar?"
"Right across the roundabout. But you don't need to mess with that, all the hustle you need is right here."
A steady crowd noise drifts over from that direction.
Should have went west at the roundabout, by the sounds of it, not east.
Branch
"Has a guy from the Superbloc spoke to you recently? Suit, glasses, bald spot."
"Forget about him. I can give you everything he can, and more."
"We're not together -- me and him."
"Even better. We can just get a boat, you and me, sail somewhere tropical -- get to know each other over cocktails and deep-fried tenderloin."
Gentle heat on your skin, coconut liqueur on your tongue. He's onto something...
"This is serious. Have you seen him around here or not?"
"I'm always serious with you. But, okay, I can see that fire in your eyes. I haven't seen him, promise."
Branch
"Forget it."
"Hey hey, don't be like that. I haven't seen him, okay? That's a promise."
"You know anything about the isolated building over there?"
Branch
"Why you asking me? You went in there, didn't you?"
"Wait. You saw that?"
"It's right across. I stay vigilant. So again, why do you ask?"
"I'm curious about what you know."
"I know I wouldn't have gone in there myself, that's all."
"I was asked to keep an eye on it, not along ago." He flicks his head toward the building. "You know. Just in case."
Branch
The Azzurris smelled something was off about it, then.
"Your employer has an interest in the place?"
"Baby-girl, there are many questions I haven't asked you. Being a thoughtful, caring man."
A courtesy he'd like to be mutual.
"Just stay away from there -- that's all I'll say."
Branch
"I see." (Don't push it.)
"I'm glad you do. And I appreciate it."
"And who asked you that?"
"In case of what?"
By whom?
"I just wanted to warn you. They're ruthless with their critique."
"Don't worry, I had no intentions of going over there."
"Nothing so far, but I'd stay away from there, if I were you."
"Why is that?"
"What kind of 'services' do you offer, exactly?"
"Baby, not only am I a businessman, I'm a purveyor of taste. I curate high-class aesthetics and deliver low-overhead miracles. Sometimes it's fashion, sometimes it's conversation pieces."
Jacket: Pristine, not bootlegged. Nails: Recently manicured. Money: Made.
The words roll off his tongue, smooth as the smoky bergamot cologne he's wearing.
"And I got fresh weed too." He pulls on his cigarette.
Branch
"Where'd you get all this fascinating stuff from?"
"The universe provides." He spreads his palms wide.
Theft, obviously.
'Fell off' the back of a tuk-tuk.
Branch
Branch
"If you ever need to help yourself to the world's supplies, I have just the thing." A twinkle in his uneven eyes.
Presented between his finger and thumb, a small but sturdy metal prong. A lockpick.
"Why not set up in the Bazaar? You'd get more traffic."
"What, with the neon bibs, Luzian snacks, all of that? That's not my movement." He shakes his head.
The way his lip curls -- revulsion, as if he'd smelled meat left to rot in the sun.
"Here works for me. Making moves of my own accord." He pokes the inside of his cheek with his tongue. "And I don't do bootlegs. Ever."
Branch
"What's wrong with bootlegs?"
"I don't mind the aesthetics." He frowns. "It's not about the quality either. It's the principle of them."
"Whenever someone says 'bootleg', all I hear is 'almost'. You almost got money. You almost got taste. You almost..." He balks at the idea. "I don't know."
You know the feeling, and how to put it into words for him.
"You almost have 'it'."
"That's it. But you don't, right? It only looks like that." He nods again, then his smile widens.
"You live long enough in close enough, maybe you start to forget the real shit."
Branch
"It's not authentic. That's why you don't like it."
"That's what I'm saying. Some of that Luzian stuff looks alright, but it's hollow. Smells wrong to me."
Both fake and shit.
"Anyway, that's just my opinion."
Branch
"Who cares as long as it looks cool?"
"I care. My grandmother always said, you are what surrounds you. So if all you got is fake shit, what's that make you?" He shrugs.
Let him think.
"I don't know how to explain it. Shit is just hollow, you know? And I don't mind anyone wearing the stuff. Maybe that's all they can afford, but..."
"Or you could just see it as cultural sabotage."
"But is it? You're still walking around, looking Luzian. You're not making it any different."
"How fresh is this weed?"
"The freshest." He opens a crumpled foil pouch. A sharp funk escapes.
Smells like rubber bands, hardly vegetal. It is also very obviously dry.
"That looks... old as hell."
"Alright, a connoisseur, then." He wags a finger at you. "Listen: yeah, this is ancient. This here is first wave greenery. Pre-legal. Pre-moral."
Someone's used to improvising pitches.
"Better not be pre-quality, too."
"You'll be seeing lizards and volcanos with this strain. That's not a guarantee, but it's not a lie either."
Branch
"How potent is it?"
"Either this is finely aged, or you think I'm an idiot."
"Okay, I believe you."
Astounding. Must've been harvested just a few days ago.
"Do you sell any other drugs?"
"Just weed, on account of it being part of my religion. Everything else is haram." He sniffs, adding punctuation.
You don't have to use it to sell it.
"You're sure?"
"I said all I can say on that."
He means that. If he said otherwise he'd be going against some kind of code.
Branch
"I'm not buying that."
"And I'm not selling it."
This guy is a businessman first and foremost. No way he's not selling something if it can turn a profit.
"That lockpick. I'll take it."
"Breaking into houses and hearts."
Branch
"Can't steal before you get this."
Branch
Buy the Yellow Sunglasses.
"You won't find those in the Bazaar."
"I'm sorry, habibti, I don't do discounts."
Buy the Space Program tracksuit top.
"Aspirational."
Purchase the Bubble Sneakers.
"If anyone stares, charge them a viewing fee, alright?"
"I'll have some of that weed."
Goat Eyes slips you a small foil bundle with a smile.
"There's nothing there." He looks down at your empty palm.
"Give me some ecstasy."
"If that's not enough, just let me know." He winks as he hands you a pill.
Branch
"I love you but you know I can't do it for free."
"Got everything I need." (Go back.)
"Alright. Tell me what's on your mind." He bites his lip.
Branch
"Let me see what have you to sell." (Browse his goods.)
"With pleasure."
Prove you can be trusted with the other drugs.
Branch
This is a man of many competing loyalties: his family, his business, his friends, and the Azzurri mob. But the one that stays his hand the most?
"We all have our religion. Know that I'll respect yours if you respect mine."
"I hear you. But catch me up real quick -- what is your religion?"
Your answer here must be important. The final test.
Do we need to be part of his gäng? Seems like the safest option.
RELIGION IS AN ILLUSION MEANT ONLY TO HOLD CAPTIVES.
Branch
"The stars. I pray to them for forgiveness."
"That's beautiful and all. But, uh, I thought you were after drugs, no?"
Of course. Religion is a drug for the masses -- it's code.
"That's beautiful and all. But, uh, I thought you were after drugs, no?""How come I never seen you around before, then?" He stares at you, before the expression cracks. "Only…"I feel sad for you if that's what you think. Must be incredibly lonely." He looks you over, shakes his head.…"That's what I meant," he whispers back.
Shiftily, he looks around, left and right. After a moment, he blows in and out, then leans in to whisper:
"You cannot tell my brothers about this, alright? But I've got the best X around." He flashes you a medicine pot full of pills.
"X? As in ecstasy?"
"Yeah, come on... shhh."
Hard to tell if he's genuinely worried about being exposed, or it's just part of the sell.
"I'll keep it quiet. You got my word."
"You're in on this now. We go down together." He puts two fingers to his head and pulls a pretend trigger.
It's not as serious as that. But you get the point.
Branch
"That's all I wanted. Thank you."
"Same as yours, probably."
"How come I never seen you around before, then?" He stares at you, before the expression cracks. "Only kidding. You know I meant drugs, right?"
"I don't have one. All religions are a scam."
"I feel sad for you if that's what you think. Must be incredibly lonely." He looks you over, shakes his head. "You know I meant drugs, right?"
(Whisper.) "I just wanted drugs."
"That's what I meant," he whispers back.
This is a man of many competing loyalties: his family, his business, his friends. But the one that stays his hand the most?
Branch
Nothing springs to mind outside of outright marrying the guy.
Definitely not. Operants cannot allow themselves to have such a vulnerability.
Branch
Branch
If he won't sell it to you then maybe someone else will. That should get through to a businessman like him.
"I've got another supplier on the other side of town. Better prices, too."
"You talking about Hakim -- goes by H? Come on, I know his prices, we use the same supply. That ain't gonna fly."
Didn’t count on another dealer of his level existing -- let alone the two of them actually talking. Wrong approach.
Branch
The only reason he's stood here is to make money out of people like you. But what makes you so special?
"I know you sell something exclusive to your favourite customers. I want in." (Wink.)
"I don't want to deny you, baby-girl. But on this occasion I have nothing else to offer you." He shrugs.
Not something to do with you then. Maybe it's something to do with him that's throwing the barrier up.
"Got a lot of money in my pocket to spend on product with a bit more bite..."
"I heard you provide protection. What can you offer?"
"Let's get more specific. Tell me the kind you need." His eyes narrow to slits.
He's scanning you, as he has scanned many before.
"You know the kind."
"I see. Someone causing you grief, baby-girl?"
A coded question. He needs to be let 'in' enough on the details to be willing to open himself up to risk.
No need to spill your guts, though, operant.
"Hypothetically."
"Then, hypothetically, it's not that simple."
"Since you're not local, let me explain something. P-town's not like other places. Yeah, there's guns around, but you don't get one easily. The laws are tight."
"Carabineros roll out these gunpowder-sniffing hounds and go on walks a couple times a year. You know, to remind people what's what. The dogs are a mean foreign breed. No hair, all teeth. My cousin, Alishba, lost a chunk of her calf to one."
"Was she carrying at the time?"
"I'm sure she was." He scratches his chin. "But she's still not walking right a decade later. My point is -- you don't walk armed around here."
"Are you carrying?"
"Nah."
His posture spells it out: not at the moment, at least.
His right pant pocket creases around something narrow and weighty. A switchblade.
"What about the knife?"
"That's just common sense. Heaters are different."
"Are you saying you can't help?" (Proceed.)
"Carabineros roll out these gunpowder-sniffing hounds and go on walks a couple times a year. You know, to…"I'm sure she was." He scratches his chin. "But she's still not walking right a decade later. My point is --…His right pant pocket creases around something narrow and weighty. A switchblade."That's just common sense. Heaters are different."
"I'm saying show me your palms. Hold them out, side by side, even." He briefly holds out his own, demonstrating.
"Just give me a price. I can pay."
"So can carabineros." He gestures at your hands. "Come on, now. Palms."
"For what?"
"For reading, what else?" He puts his hands up, defensively. "No touching involved."
He's not lying, but it's not your lines he's interested in.
Show him your palms.
"My great-grandmother, back in Rustam, she was a strega." He studies your hands, squinting. "Saved three men from suicide. She married a bostanji and made him quit."
A high ranking member of the military, sworn to protect the Rustamian head of state -- back when the Dream of Rustam still was a state.
"Long life line, but it's broken in two spots. One in the past, one in the future. See how it veers? Different place and time. Had a close brush in another country, baby-girl?"
Branch
The bullet by your heart twitches, then stills.
"Closer than you think."
"I'm sorry about that."
"Your love line's split clean in two, about mid-way. Like you were cut off for a while. First time seeing this."
A dash of nonsense to disarm you while he runs a checklist.
"I see what this is. I pulled that trick on a drunk ambassador or two."
"Makes me wonder where you learned it from." He smiles.
Suddenly, his posture straightens, and he looks up. The soft warmth emanating from him dissipates.
"Alright. You're good. We can talk."
"Wait. Keep going. I'm kind of into it."
"Maybe if I take you out to dinner one night. You, me, lamb tagine, slow-cooked in saffron and cinnamon. Fluffy couscous, drizzled butter. Honeyed eggplant for dessert. But for now -- business."
"Meaning you're willing to sell?"
"Just say the word."
Branch
"I've lost many people. Can you see that too?"
"I can see you're barely shaking." He looks into your eyes.
"Are you done?"
"Almost." He considers you, looking into your eyes, holding himself still.
(Hiss at your hand.) "Shut. up."
"So I'm not wrong. And yet you're barely shaking." He looks into your eyes.
It's not the lines he cares about. Only your reactions to his reactions.
"What do you mean it's broken in the future?"
"Could mean anything, could mean nothing." He shrugs. "Whatever it is, you'll be better off facing it with my protection."
Could be another of his sales pitches. Could be...
People like him have an intuition for things like this. Mystic knowledge, passed down through the generations... this isn't good news.
"I thought we were talking business."
"We are."
"No." (Lie.)
"Alright, keep your secrets."
(To your hand.) "I knew you were spying on me. Who do you work for?"
"Relax," he says, a giggle underlying the word.
The past you can account for... but the future?
Thud in your chest. Heart skipped a beat.
"Not going to happen." (Back out.)
"Then we go no further." He kisses his teeth. "If you change your mind, let me know."
Branch
"No. I'll be the one causing it."
"Mhh-mm." He nods, slowly, pushing out his cheek with his tongue.
"My business is mine, Goat-Face."
"And my business is getting you anything you rightfully deserve, but it's not always that simple."
"A gun."
"Let's say I'm looking for protection. Are you the man to talk to?"
"And I'm looking for a government that'll tuck me in at night." His eyes narrow to slits. "What kind of protection?"
"I'd like to get my hands on better protection than what I have."
"I was wondering when you'd ask."
Branch
"Alright. Let's start with the big picture. What kind of protection are we talking about?"
78mm barrel. Length: 150mm, maximum. Fifteen round magazine. And, crucially: the trigger's click must feel nice.
Massive. We want it big enough to drop something with hooves.
There are many crimes you may commit; none worse than mediocre aesthetics.
Branch
"Pocket-sized, clean, easy to ditch."
"Elegant. Cold. A bit curvaceous. Just one move and bam -- right through the chest. Like when I first saw you."
"Steel or polymer?"
"Elegant. Cold. A bit curvaceous. Just one move and bam -- right through the chest. Like when I first saw…"Mmhmm. Big bang, medium package -- nothing like it.""Nothing else would do. A vision with a vision -- that's what you are.""Classy but simple, keeping it on the down low so you don't attract too much attention. I see you."
Steel. Superior feedback -- every bullet shuddering, while you remain still.
Go for polymer. You'll move with it, not against it.
"What would you recommend?"
"Legacy versus logistics. Steel's hefty, but kicks less. Polymer's light, slick, plastic-fantastic. Personally? I'm a steel man."
"Let's go for steel."
"That's my girl." He taps a knuckle against his chest. "Now, this one's crucial. Safety switch, or you riding raw?" He winks.
Safety. No impact on performance, and it makes a really nice 'click' too.
A leash? No thanks.
"Safety on."
"Sure. I can respect that. Plus you get the satisfaction of taking it off."
"For you, I'll even throw in an add-on -- gratis. You got a particular in mind?"
You need to merge with the gun in your palm. Become one.
Something to keep your arm steady when it gets heated. Ultimate stability.
Keeping it quiet wouldn't go amiss.
Branch
"Can I have more than one, if I ask nicely?"
"No can do, baby. You'll have to choose."
Branch
"Aftermarket grip -- can't have this thing slip."
"Got just the thing in mind. Hugs your palm like it knows you. Intimately."
"Oh man. I'm excited for you." He rubs his hands together. "Give me two months, and it's yours."
Out of the question. He must be able to get you something sooner than that.
Branch
"Two months? You're kidding, right?"
Baby, I come from a gun dynasty. We breathe gunpowder and burp recoil. Our babies learn to field-strip rifles in the dark. We don't joke about them."
"But I need to put bullets in people now."
"My great-grandmother, peace be upon her soul, taught me there are two things you can't rush in life: Love, and guns. We're dealing with both."
"What can you get me by tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow? Shit. Why do I always fall for the high-maintenance girls." He rubs his neck in a jerky motion.
"Look, it won't be your dream piece, but it'll be solid." He gestures with his hand. "Cash up front."
Branch
You sure about this? You already made your own gun.
Branch
"Let's say I'm in. What does the money get me, exactly?"
"A factory-issue, fresh out the crate. Likely to be a 9mm. No paper trail, serial scrubbed."
"I know your weapon the second I'll see it. But quality and quick turnarounds don't come cheap."
Branch
"What tells me you won't just take the cash and run?"
Branch
"And what? Be haunted by Vespar for the rest of my days? Come on."
"But I got to tell you: I won't force your hand either. That's not how I do things. It's up to you."
Branch
"Don't try to hurt my feelings. I'm a consummate professional. You have my word. And my heart."
"Professionals offer guarantees."
"Those are for sheitans. You come to me, pay for a piece -- I get you a piece. If it's not perfect for you, it never leaves my hands."
"How much is your word worth anyway?"
"Only everything."
"Alright. Good enough."
"Nah, I don't deal in 'good enough'. It'll be better than that."
Order a gun.
"Trust." He doesn't count the money, just pockets it, and nods at you.
"I should have it for you soon -- hours not days."
Branch
Branch
You check your pockets, hoping for a miracle. All you find is lint.
Branch
"I don't have that kind of money on me."
"Alright. Just tell me when you have the money. I'll handle the rest."
Branch
"I need to think about it." (Go back.)
"I thought you needed something quick?" He frowns. "But alright. Tell me when you're good, and I'll handle the rest."
You sure about this? You could just make your dream piece instead.
Branch
Branch
You already have a book with gun schematics inside. Just got to piece it all together.
There must be a book with gun schematics somewhere in this city -- just got to find it.
"I could do with a tactical sling. The easier the reach, the better."
"Sure, I got one in mind. Zips like butter, no noise, no question."
"I'll take a silencer."
"I'll see if I can get you a subsonic kit. If not, it'll be a stubby suppressor."
"No add-on, I'm a purist."
"Clean frame, clean soul. I'm starting to think we're really meant to be."
"You know I'm all about that raw action."
"You keep talking like that and we'll be fogging up some windows in no time."
"Polymer."
"Noted. Now, this one's crucial. Safety switch, or you riding raw?" He winks.
At the Novessa Greenhouse, you and the other would-be operants were trained on steel. There's something comforting in the familiarity.
"A room-clearer. Whatever's closest to a portable missile launcher."
"Mmhmm. Big bang, medium package -- nothing like it."
"I need it to be as stylish as it is deadly."
"Nothing else would do. A vision with a vision -- that's what you are."
"One that goes bang, preferably. But, like, quietly."
"Classy but simple, keeping it on the down low so you don't attract too much attention. I see you."
"Alright, I do need protection, so let's do this." (Show him your palms.)
Branch
"I'd like to put in an order." (Buy a gun.)
"Got the cash." (Order a gun.)
Branch
He takes a quick look at your attempt at payment and shakes his head, knowing it's not enough.
Branch
"I'm here to pick up my order."
"Right, yeah."
No cologne this time -- only a faint, metallic scent.
"But I gotta level with you. Some complications came up." He snorts.
"What complications?"
"People don't always line up how you want them to. But don't worry..." He pats his jacket, the area around the left-side of his chest.
"Look. I don't know how to ask for this, but I'm gonna need more cash before I can hand you the goods."
Funny. Didn't seem like he had any problems asking that.
His balance is off today. He's favouring his left leg, like the right one can't be trusted. Like it hurts.
"Something wrong with your leg?"
"The aforementioned complications. I'm sorry, baby-girl. It is what it is."
Branch
"The aforementioned complications. I'm sorry, baby-girl. It is what it is."Branch 649Branch 663Branch 719Branch 749Branch 754" I don't know that'd I'd blame you for it, but... I'm sorry, baby-girl. It is what it is.""I wouldn't be holding any steel if I was trying to short-change you. I'm sorry, baby-girl. It is what it is."
"Tell me what happened."
"Why? Trying to see if I'm full of shit?"
"Absolutely."
"Makes sense."
"The meet was in the lot behind Mesquita Al-Nour -- a mosque in old Viúdas. Way east, tourists don't go there. Hell, most Portofirans don't."
"Bad neighbourhood?"
"Poorer than the rest. Used to be butchers and livestock there. Slaughter lanes, lime tanks, cold rooms. Not a place for living, these days, but people do. Anyway..."
"The guy holding wasn't the guy selling. Wrong voice, wrong accent. Wrong smell, you know? Doubt he had your order. So I walked."
Old Viúdas shifted around him. There was a route traced for him, but he veered off. Around the corner, a car kept waiting, engine ticking. In the trunk: carpet and old rope.
"You made the right call."
"Yeah, I'm thinking so too."
"But you got a piece anyway. Where from?"
"Paid off a logistics clerk down in Quisach. Works one of the port depots -- could open it for me. A few hundred sol for twenty minutes. Yeah..."
He's tired. The kind of tired that comes from getting through the wrong version of the night.
Does his story hold?
He is lying to you. But not in the way you think -- his night was worse than that. He took some genuine risks to get you this gun.
Why not tell me?
Because he wants to do right by you. It is that simple. Perhaps you can use that...
Play into his affections? Easy.
He won't be able to resist seeing his baby-girl throw a strop.
"Everything okay over there?"
Branch
Seems a bit mean to exploit him like that.
He's been through a lot worse. It's written across his face.
Oh, he's clearly lying. He expects you to believe he walked into a kebab joint, but didn't order one?
The gun. Let's focus on the gun.
Who cares? Behold, the guilt! How it drips from his pores! Not unlike the tasty, mouth-watering meat he didn't bring you... When you haven't had one of those in years and years...
So he's lying?
Who knows? But he is definitely selfish. And you're pretty hungry, what with all the running around you do.
No idea about the gun thing. Sorry.
Stop, please! What about the gun?!
Wow. I almost missed that.
No, you didn't. The guilt's so obvious. It oozes out of him, like grease dripping slowly from a cut of perfectly roasted meat... Which you so deserve...
"That really how it went down?"
"Wish it had been different."
Branch
"How'd he take it?"
"He started saying the right things to make me stay. That made me walk faster. Ducked into a kebab joint with people around. He didn't follow."
Nod for him to go on.
"Don't think you are. Just curious about what went down."
"Standard Portofiro bullshit is what."
"Wouldn't you?"
"You asked more nicely than I would."
"I appreciate you went through a lot, but I can't believe you're treating me like this."
"Come on, don't be like that, habibti. I put my neck on the line for you."
That's it. Play up the damsel in distress angle, it's his weak spot.
"You're going to let a woman like me roam the streets unarmed?"
Branch
"You have a gun. Not a good one I know, but it got you this far."
"All you care about is money. It sickens me."
"Stop, stop. You're breaking my heart," he pleads, bumping a fist on his chest.
After a moment, his face drops as he realises what he has to do.
"Okay, you can have the gun. I'll have to do some extra deals or something." He pulls out a bag and hands it to you.
Branch
Triple-stitched premium nylon. Expensive.
Look inside the bag.
Inside, a familiar sight: a Rohrenmacht 12-B. Heavy-framed, semi-automatic.
Branch
Branch
Manufactured in Kino's Gambit. Slide coated in dark-grey finish. Fixed barrels, ported. Machined for high-accuracy pressure.
The killer inside you grins.
There's something else in there...
Next to the weapon, two twelve-round magazines wrapped in waxed paper.
The young man studies you, not daring to ask.
He came through.
"You did good, Goat Eyes."
"And I'm sorry about the... you know. Unexpected fuckery."
The look of a kid pretending to be an adult in a room full of consequences.
"Don't be. I'm used to it."
"I'm getting that sense, yeah."
"So, you off, baby-girl, or you wanna chat some more? You know I'm always here for you."
Branch
Now it's all done, everything in him hopes that his concession will earn him a place in your heart.
Branch
And just like that, warmth radiates from him once more. If only it were that easy for you.
"It's a learning moment. So, learn."
"Alright."
"Appreciate your professionalism."
"Appreciate you." He places a palm on his heart.
Just nod.
Branch
"I thought we had something special."
"No, baby-girl, it's not like that at all. You know this..."
"What you're showing me right now is that you don't care for me at all."
"I'll take my money back. Now."
"Can't do that. It's gone."
STATE-ISSUED, LOOTED OFF A CORPSE, OR SELF-PRODUCED. THAT IS HOW YOU GET A GUN. WRITE IT DOWN.
You agreed to the amount. You paid upfront. It's on him to take the loss.
Branch
"I'll take the gun, then. Hand it over."
"It's yours once I see the hundred sol. I didn't want it to be this way, but it is."
Branch
"Whatever extra costs you encountered have nothing to do with our deal."
"Deals like this change. This isn't like buying groceries or a house. Different world, different rules."
"Shit."
"I know, I know." He offers you a saddened look.
Pull your home-made gun on him.
You're about to make your move when...
"I see you. Wouldn't do that."
His trigger finger twitches.
The tension before a stand-off is known to him, engrained.
Branch
"Why?"
Branch
"Listen, you bested me on the draw before. But I'm ready for you this time."
While he looks relaxed, his elbows and knees are locked, deliberately tensed like a spring.
This is a man who knows guns, the mess they make. He doesn't throw out threats like that lightly.
Branch
Eyes aren't bloodshot. He's close to sober -- his reactions will be better than last time.
This path can only end badly, for the both of you.
Branch
Eyes aren't bloodshot. He's close to sober -- minimal reaction delay.
Branch
"All I'm saying is it didn't work out so well for you last time."
"I've been through too much to get this for you. Would be a shame for it to all be for nothing."
"You're trying to rob me. You don't get to advise me."
Go through with it. (Pull out your gun.)
He did it. Goat Eyes made a hole in your head, as big as the one you left in his heart.
Branch
End of this branch
"Alright." (Back down.)
"Let's do this properly." He nods.
Branch
"Alright." (Pay him.)
He takes the cash, neatly, and tucks it into his vest.
"Swear on Rustam's name, you won't regret this." He pulls out a bag and hands it to you.
You pat yourself down, twice, hoping to find money that simply isn't there.
Branch
"I can't afford that right now."
"I can hold on to this for as long as you need. It's the least I can do."
Branch
"Counter-offer: my elbow, your teeth."
" I don't know that'd I'd blame you for it, but... I'm sorry, baby-girl. It is what it is."
"What's it for?"
"You trying to hustle me, Goat Eyes?"
"I wouldn't be holding any steel if I was trying to short-change you. I'm sorry, baby-girl. It is what it is."
"Don't need your sob story. Where's my gun?"
He pats his jacket, the area around the left-side of his chest.
"You doing okay?"
"I'm standing. But more importantly..." He pats his jacket, the area around the left-side of his chest.
"Here, for my order." (Hand him the money.)
Branch
He squints at your empty palm, then shakes his head.
Branch
"Is my special order ready yet?"
Goat Eyes taps his watch and shakes his head.
Branch
"Later, Goat Eyes."
Branch
Branch
"I'll be seeing you."
His smirk's gone. Just a tight line now, barely there.
Branch
Branch
"Baby, these return visits make me think we should be exclusive."
Branch
Branch
"This your little tribute to Vespar? Looking much better in the uniform than he ever did. Mmm."
Branch
"Mmm, I could get used to you wearing that uniform. Got that woman in charge look. Tell me what you need."
Branch
Branch
Branch
Goat Eyes offers a tired smile as you approach. As usual, he peruses your curves and doesn't hide it.
Quick, pull your gun on him again. Just for kicks.
Easy. There's no recognition on his end. Not one dot connected.
"Yeah, alright, that settles it. Took me a while, but I got you all figured out by now. I know what you are."
"Oh? I'd love to hear it."
"Don't you 'oh' me. I know your soul. And body." He wags a finger at you. "What you are is a sorceress. You appear, and whoosh -- my hardships vanish."
Your deception holds. Excellent.
"Don't you 'oh' me. I know your soul. And body." He wags a finger at you. "What you are is a sorceress. You…"Explain what? Your sorceries? Your magicks?" He wags a finger at you. "Yeah, that's right -- you're a…"A sorceress, that's what you are. Don't even pretend, I know your body and soul by now." He wags a finger at…
Poor guy. You should make sure he's okay, at least.
Branch
"Hardships? Everything all right?"
"Nothing for you to worry about. Some business problems. It happens." He nods. "But the real ones get back up after they stumble. Always."
"Now, speak! Say what you need from me, you temptress, you qarînah."
Branch
"Fine, you got me. I am a sorceress."
"You see? She admits it." He nods at the sky, then at you. "How many men have fallen for your devious magicks before me, huh?"
Professionally? Low-triple digits, by the time they put you in the Freezer.
"Close. I am a thing of pure darkness, woven into flesh."
"Yeah, I bet you got your dark side. But that wouldn't explain the sexiness."
"I can explain."
"Explain what? Your sorceries? Your magicks?" He wags a finger at you. "Yeah, that's right -- you're a sorceress. You appear, and woosh, my hardships vanish."
(Move your hand closer to your gun.)
"A sorceress, that's what you are. Don't even pretend, I know your body and soul by now." He wags a finger at you. "You appear, and whoosh -- my hardships vanish."
Branch
"Habibti." He nods. "How's your friend?"
"He's doing better. Thanks to you."
"Is that gratitude I hear?" He winks. "I just did my thing. You did yours. Nothing more."
"It's been quiet on my end." He nods. "Vis-a-vis my employer."
"Glad to hear it."
"Now that that's out of the way, we got something more important to discuss. Business."
"What business?"
Branch
Branch
"The business of you, as always. And you need it. It broke my heart to see you holding that 'protection'. You deserve better."
Branch
"The usual business, baby. The business of you. Just tell me what you need."
"The business of you, and whatever it is you deserve."
Branch
"You're talking to an elite purveyor of many services. Maybe I get you better protection than that thing you pulled on me. Just tell me what you need."
Branch
"I'm just a gorgeous, young entrepreneur and provider of many services. You tell me what you need."
"How'd you pull it off?"
"Finesse, that's all you need to know, because there's more important things to discuss."
"So what now?"
"Business."
"He'll soon be back to producing enough smoke to blot out a small sun."
"Sounds like he's recovering, then. Good, that's good."
"Marginally, but I need him at peak capacity."
"Go easy on him, alright? The man looked like he was in a rough shape."
"Been wondering when you'd show up." He frowns. "Anything you wanna tell me, habibti?"
You robbed the man and left. An apology isn't undeserved.
An amateur was outplayed by a professional -- there's nothing to explain.
Branch
"Look, Goat Eyes..."
"Don't worry, habibti. I know you didn't mean to. Not really."
"At first, I asked myself, 'Goat Eyes, you luscious, gifted, intrepid entrepreneur -- what djinn did you offend so, that the love of your life would treat you like the cheapest of rugs?"
"Two answers came to me. First, and as I told many GMs before: man, I didn't do shit. Second, this gorgeous woman wasn't trying to hurt me. Her soul's too beautiful. So why do this, then?"
"Your friend -- tall guy. How's he holding up?"
"Alright. I should've told you."
"Yeah, you should've. But that's okay. Communication's the hardest part of any relationship."
"I've jumped people for worse reasons." His lips curl, straining against an old weight. "So I forgive you, out of the boundless love in my heart."
"Just know that I am sorry."
"I appreciate that. Now..."
Branch
"Tell me what you need. Maybe today I get you better protection than that thing you pulled on me, yeah?"
Branch
"Business, then? Just tell me what you need, and I'll provide."
"That's big of you."
"You've seen me move product, but you haven't seen the mountains I'd move for you. But now that that's out of the way..."
"Tight. Business, then?"
"You're right, you're right." He bites his lips. "We already understand each other, no need to waste words."
"He's fine."
"Good."
"Don't know what you're talking about."
"Come on. I know what I was carrying. And if he wasn't doing any better, you wouldn't be here. All I'm saying is..."
"Nothing comes to mind."
Branch
Branch
Goat Eyes leans back as you approach. His off-axis gaze slowly glides along your body.
Crap, the Azzurri delivery man. Get the gun.
Easy there. No recognition on his end. Not even a hint.
Hold on. What's the look on his face, then?
Erotic appreciation. But again: no recognition.
Obviously. I crushed that robbery.
Goat Eyes continues to stare at you, languidly.
Your opacity holds. Pretend this is the first time you two have ever met.
Branch
"Hold up, hold up. Before you say a word -- are you single, or is this punishment for my voluminous sins?"
Branch
Poor guy. He had such a rough night.
Branch
"That line ever work on anyone?"
"A line, she says. That was my heart speaking. Anyway, what do you need help with babygirl?"
Branch
"A line, she says. That was my heart speaking. Anyway, what do you need help with babygirl?""Alhamdulillah. Now, you came to me for a reason. Tell me how I can help you.""Makes sense. Now, what can I do for you today?""Lucky for her, I'm a respectful man -- most days. Now, tell me how I can help you today."
Branch
"I heard you're the guy to talk to for 'protection'."
"Maybe I am. And a gorgeous woman like you, I can see why she'd need that. But just so you know, I procure all sorts of goods and services."
"The name's Goat Eyes. I am a man of many endeavours." He taps his chest twice with his index finger.
"Maybe I am. And a gorgeous woman like you, I can see why she'd need that. But just so you know, I procure…"Only if you got mole vision. People come to me for all sorts of services. Call it fate. Call it timing. Me,…"The business of you. You walk in here, you parlay with me -- you're already half-sold. The other half? I'll…"Mostly, you look gorgeous -- but appearances don't mean much. People see me, they don't always see a guy…
"Aren't you the parking lot attendant?"
"Only if you got mole vision. People come to me for all sorts of services. Call it fate. Call it timing. Me, I call it good business."
"You running some kind of business?"
Alternative wording
(Feign confusion.) "You running some kind of business?"
"The business of you. You walk in here, you parlay with me -- you're already half-sold. The other half? I'll take care of that. Part of my services."
"Do I look like I need help?"
"Mostly, you look gorgeous -- but appearances don't mean much. People see me, they don't always see a guy working two dozen angles across five timelines. But that's the kind of services I provide."
Branch
This must be the 'heavyset Rustamian' the bartender at the Fogged Mirror saw with VIRTUE.
Branch
And the Boatman said he's a front for the Azzurri mob. Intriguing.
Branch
This must be the front for the Azzurri mob, mentioned by the Boatman.
You've seen this kind of bravado before. He's running some kind of side-hustle.
"Single, with a vengeance."
"Alhamdulillah. Now, you came to me for a reason. Tell me how I can help you."
"Must be a punishment."
"Makes sense. Now, what can I do for you today?"
"I have a girlfriend. She lives in the telephone."
"Lucky for her, I'm a respectful man -- most days. Now, tell me how I can help you today."
Maybe I should apologise, just in case?
How high was he that night?
Oh, cosmically.
The young man leans back, his gaze slowly tracing your outline -- before widening in recognition.
"You..."
"I knew it. From the moment our souls met." He taps his chest with a closed fist, twice. "Wallah, our grand-children will rejoice in hearing this story."
Easy -- he's obviously not harbouring a grudge.
"What story?"
"The story of us. How on the night we met, what you really stole was my heart."
Branch
"But tell me." He straightens his posture, the grin fading. "Your friend, is he feeling any better?"
Branch
Branch
"Yeah. Thanks to you."
"Listen. People move how they move." He eases off the grin. "And it's never random. I can still see you, under those streetlights. You know how you looked?
Worried.
Branch
"Besides gorgeous?"
"In addition to it."
"Like I was shitting myself."
"Yeah, but not just."
"You looked desperate."
He's thought about it, turned it over and over in his head until it all clicked.
In another life, he'd have made a fine operant.
Branch
"Maybe a little bit."
"Nah, baby. It was a lot. But it's okay."
"Your friend -- tall guy. I hope he's holding up alright." He flicks his finger back and forth between you. "And all I'm saying is, you and me, we're good."
"Why?"
"I've jumped people for worse reasons." His lips curl, straining against an old weight.
"Yo, you hear the way I said that?" He breaks into a grin. "All deep and complex -- that was charming as fuck, right? Oh, man!"
How can we not love him? He's got all the makings of a top-tier gäng member. Solid right through.
"Alright, I'll give it to you."
"And I'll give you the world in return if you let me."
"So what now, Goat Eyes?"
"Eventually, we go grab dinner. You fall for me. We have many offspring. We live." He shrugs. "But if you insist on now..."
Branch
"Whatever."
"Yeah, you liked it."
"It has only highlighted our differences."
"That easy?"
"What gave it away?"
"Only everything." His lips curl, pulling against an old weight.
"Wrong. Laughably so."
"Is it?" He counts on his fingers. "I saw no greed. No anger. It wasn't business. Wasn't about me. Wasn't about my employer either."
"In control."
"With the way you moved? Sure, but not just that."
"A bit rusty."
"Nah, you were alright. I'm just one of the best to ever do it."
"You tell me."
"Surprised you're not angry."
"At what? It's only the fool who blames the universe for its blessings."
"You've got issues, man. Serious issues."
"Just the one, habibti. It's called 'love', and I'm afraid it's terminal."
Branch
The young man leans back, his gaze slowly tracing you. Both of his eyes drift outward, as if pulled by different horizons.
A mild, yet regrettably symmetrical case of double-strabismus.
Branch
"Hold up, hold up. Before you say a word -- I didn't have anything to do with it. Man needs a fair trial before punishment."
He can't take his eyes off your outfit. Must be jumpy around law enforcement.
"What's the problem?"
"Hm, interesting. You're asking questions, not raising a weapon in the air, shouting over to your backup..."
"Yeah, I see it now. You're not a carabinero at all. Far too many good curves for that. So tell me, are you single, or is this punishment for my voluminous sins?"
Branch
"Sounds mega guilty to me."
"That's it? Not gonna raise a weapon in the air, shout over to your backup..."
"I'm not what I look like."
"Yeah, I see that now. In fact, I see quite a lot." He bites his lip. "Are you single, or is this punishment for my voluminous sins?"
The young man leans back, his gaze slowly tracing your outline. Both of his eyes drift outward, as if pulled by different horizons.
